St. Pius X Church – Kundapura

Churches in Udupi

St. Pius X Church, Pius nagar dedicated to Saint Pius X, is located in Hanglur village of Kundapura Taluk of Udupi District. It is situated about 3-km from Kundapura Before the parish was established, the Kundapur parish and the priests from that parish served the spiritual needs of the people. Rev. Casmir D’Sa was the founder parish priest of the parish. St Pius X parish was established in 1959 and the existing church building was formerly blessed in 1961. Since then the parish saw lot of development under the leadership of six enthusiastic parish priests with the cooperation of the people Fr D’Souza was succeeded by Rev Jacob Crasta, at whose tenure many of the parish associations came into being. The German church bell and the belfry was erected during his epoch. He was succeeded by Rev. Sylvester D’Souza, an outgoing priest, who kept a harmonious relation with non-catholic as well with several welfare programmes for the whole society. The silver Jubilee project was started by him with a new Church Hall building, which saw its completion during the time of the next parish priest, Rev Vincent D’Souza. During his era the major part of the renovation of the church and the building of the new presbytery were done. The present Parish Priest Rev. Maxim Noronha did the reconstruction of the Sacristy.

St. Pius X English Medium School commenced in the year 1997. The school made a remarkable progress in no time after the St. Ann’s of Providence sisters took up the school in 1998, after opening their convent in the parish. The classes reached up to Std.VII and now looking forward to begin the high school from the academic year 2001-2002.

A chapel was built in 1997 at Koteshwar, dedicated to St. Antony of Padua to help out to the spiritual needs of the people around, who were having a real difficulty to reach the parish church for religious ceremonies. The Almighty has blessed by the services of Carmelite Fathers who offer Mass everyday in this Chapel. But for major feasts and celebrations all the people gather in the parish Church as one family. The Carmelite Fathers have opened a monastery within the parish boundary at Katkere near Koteshwar. At present Rev Boniface D’Souza, O.C.D. is heading this monastery since it’s founding. So the parish is spiritually active by the services of the parish priest and the religious in the parish. Parish Pastoral Council and different associations of the parish are actively involved in the parish life. In the latest developments, Small Christian Communities at different ward level, have become the backbone of the parish community life. The existing funds are strengthened to help out the needy especially for education and healthcare.

The great Jubilee Year 2000 was full of activities in the parish throughout the year. As the lasting memories, a house is built for a needy family, a fund with the name “Christa Jayanthi 2000 Fund” has been established to help the needy girls of the parish for their marriage and a Calvary scene has been erected at the entrance of the church compound. The feast of St. Pius X is celebrated every year on 21st of August. The parish feast is on the 2nd week of January with the Confrectory Sunday on the preceding Sunday, and the Liturgy of the word of God celebration on the eve of the feast. Major events of the cultural show takes place every year on the evening of the parish feast.

All the major projects of the parish taken up so far have been successfully completed with the cooperation of the benefactors. The ongoing formation of the children and youth, building the people into a community of one heart and mind through small Christian communities and other means is the continuous ministry in the parish. Such and other projects will reach its goal with the cooperation of the people and the support of our well-wishers. This is our hope.
