This shloka justifies that Swami Hrishikesha is indeed the first pontiff. True to his name, he was ‘Vasheekrata Hrisheeka’ – the one who has control over all his senses. ‘Srisumadhwavijaya’ gives glimpses of his life. He preserved Madhwacharya’s works by personally writing it. The available works ‘Nyasa paddhati’ and ‘Tithi nirnaya’ are worshipped in the Palimar Math till date.
The ‘Sampradaya paddhati’ states that Madhwacharya gave the idol of Prateeka Anjaneya and Kodandarama accompanied by Sita and Lakshmana to Shri Hrishikesha. The pontiffs who came later started worshipping these idols and this tradition came to be called as Shri Hrishikeshateertha Samsthan. Since the Moola Math was at Palimar, people called it Palimar Math.
This lineage, which was started by Madhwacharya, has had 29 pontiffs so far. The present Paryaya Swamiji Shri Shri Vidyadheesha Teertha is the thirtieth pontiff. All pontiffs who headed the Math were scholars in their own mite.
The Guru of the present swamiji, Shri Shri Vidyamaanya Teertha was a scholar par excellence. People from all walks of life were attracted towards him. Such was his charisma. During his paryaya period, he offered golden cradle, golden chariot, diamond studded crown and other valuable items to Lord Krishna.
The present pontiff of the Math Sri Vidyadeesha Teertha was born in 1956 (Manmatha, Vaishaka, Bahula, Navami) and accepted sanyasa from Sri Vibhudesha Teertha of Admar Math in 1979. (Siddarthi, jyestha, Shuddha, Navami) and has been following the footsteps of his Guru.
