Sri Manmdhwasiddhantha Prabhodhini Sanskrit Mahapathashala is the elder educational institution involved in imparting Sanskrit education in Udupi since ages. The school which was said to be in existence even before Sri Madhwacharya has contributed immensely for the spread of Veda, Vedic culture in this part of the state. History says that even Sri Madhwacharya was the tutor in this school when it was functioning at Sri Madantheshwara Temple following true Gurukula system. Later various Swamijis of Ashta Maths of Udupi decided to impart knowledge of Sanskrit and of vedas, vedanthas and dwaitha philosophy in very systematic manner. The school started by the Ashta Matts of Udupi developed over the years and earned name as the best institution for learning Sanskrit in coastal Karnataka and its fame spread to other states. Students from various parts of the coastal belt started coming here seeking Sanskrit education. As the strength of the school mounted, the swamijis found it difficult to continue management and in 1913, they constituted 15 member executive body to look after the school and its management. In 1919, even the Madras University certified the institution the best for Sanskrit education and started sending students from the University to this school.
Due to expansion and its popularity, the school management found it difficult to continue in Madanantheshwara temple premises. Realizing the importance of having separate building for the school, Sri Vibhudhamanya Theertha swamiji of Admar Math started fund raising for the new school building. The project was continued by Sri Raghumanya Theertha Swamiji of Palimar Math and completed by Sri Vibhudesha Theertha Swamiji who raised fund from all over. The new college building was inaugurated on June 14, 1951 in its present premises in the heart of the Udupi city.
The school has been imparting free education in Sanskrit and providing higher education Nyaya Shasthra, Jyothishya and Sanskrit literature. Even many Swamijis of Sri Krishna Math were also the students of this institution. With the formation of Karnataka state, the education system of the college has been changed. At present the Pathashala is providing special education in Prathama, Kavya, Sahithya and four shasthras. The college also runs a primary school where Sanskrit is being taught as major language and a high school. The students passed out from these institutions can join either Sanskrit College or any other college for further education. Even now the college has retained the reputation all over as the best center for Sanskrit education and learned staff including swamijis of various maths have been imparting Sanskrit education in various subjects of their specialization in this college.
