Udupi, is the first institution of its kind to be established in this part of the state. Ayurveda is an age old system of medicine that has come down to us through the ages. Contributions to its progress and development have been made by scholars, sages and saints of yore.
Ayurveda simply means science of life. It is mainly based on herbs and other vegetation products such as roots, leaves, barks etc. It is not simply curative but also a health giving primitive system of medicine.
SDM College of Ayurveda, at Udupi, was started in 1 958, by a dedicated band of enthusiasts in Ayurveda. They formed the ‘Karnataka Ayurveda Sangha’ and started an institution to train students for a diploma course. Encouraged by the response they started a degree course in 1 968. It is His Holiness, Swamiji of Sri Pejavara Matt, who entreated Sri. D. Veerendra Heggade ofDharmasthala, to take over and develop it. Hence it was handed over to S. D. M.. E. Society.
