Chitrakala Mandira Kala Vidyalaya (CKM), a Fine Art College having over four decades of purposeful existence has become a cultural landmark of Udupi. It has been awarding Diploma and Degree in visual art since 1971.
Pramila Cholayya was one of the founders of Chitrakala Mandira, popularly known as CKM in the art circle. Laxman Bhat was the first Principal who is an alumnus of J.J. School of Art Mumbai. Pramila, after finishing her study in Ken School of Art Bangalore came to live in Udupi and newly started the college. As a Director, she put all her efforts in nurturing the budding artists. During her tenure, she conducted many State and National Level Art Programmes and invited many eminent and young artists to Udupi. She encouraged the culture of art appreciation around Udupi and deeply loved this institute during her living days.
CKM has an art gallery by name Vibhoothi and is appreciated for its activities in the gallery. It regularly conducts exhibitions, seminars, conferences, workshops and demonstration attracting wide audience. These events help students and art connoisseurs to get to know about the current state of the art. The sand sculptures done on various occasions under the direction of Laxman Bhat are big crowd pullers.
The Institute is recognized by Karnataka Govt. and is affiliated to Kannada University, Hampi. The degree offered is BVA (Bachelor of Visual Art). Artists with this degree are much sought in the fields of cinema, graphic design, interior decoration, animation, advertising and teaching in schools. Candidates who have passed SSLC or PUC can join the BVA course. CKM has hostel facility and midday meal scheme. Students from backward communities are provided with scholarships. The College has a full-fledged library with more than 1000 books. College is well equipped with computer, printmaking and pottery machineries.
Faculties picked from diverse Universities teach at C.K.M Rajendra Trasi(AM.G.D,M.F.A), (9739249951) is the current Principal and Raghavendra.k.amin(B.F.A,M.F.A), Naveen.G(B.V.A,M.F.A) are Lecturer of this College. Hobby classes are conducted for children and amateurs during weekends and vacation.
Many well-known artists from here and abroad have conducted lecture-demonstrations at this institute. Students keep continuously participating in the workshops, camps, exhibitions every year, conducted by art organizations around the country – Banglore, Orissa, New Delhi, Nagpur, Ujjain, Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune. During Institute’s art festivals, the college campus attracts art lovers, locals and visitors.
