Pramila Cholayya was born in Sholapur (Maharastra) in 1939. She studied fine arts in the KEN SCHOOL OF ART, Bangalore and obtained her Diploma in Painting. She is the founder Director of CHITRA KALA MANDIRA School of Art. The School is a centre of excellence imparting education in all respects of Art leading to DIPLOMA and ART MASTER degrees. It is in existence for the last 15 Years. The School is recognised by the GOVERNMENT OF KARNATAKA. The current strength of students is 60. A team of 5 teachers form the teaching core. Special efforts have also been put by Pramila to create greater awareness and Art appreciation Culture among people in Udipi and surroundings, by conducting Exhibitions, Art awareness camps , Symposia, demonstrations and shows. She is a member of KARNATAKA LALITKALA ACADEMY. Her paintings reflect the Indian life styles both ethnic and modern with a special focus on women and her varied cultural and social roles.
A vast number of Exhibitions have been held at various places on a variety of themes. A special mention of her Exhibitions are the ones held at MUMBAI(1985), BANGALORE (1986,1995), UDIPI (1991, 1998), and FUKUOKA, JAPAN (1996). She participated in the Karnataka Lalit Kala Academy exhibitions held at Belgaum, Bangalore and Jaipur. Her paintings are in the collection of many art lovers and connoisseurs in SINGAPORE, U.S.A., and JAPAN. Her contribution to cultural exchange has been the invitation and training of a Japanese student ” Ms. Kumiko Nishida ” in 1997 to study Indian art techniques for 3 months.
Her future plans include conducting camps and workshops in her institute on a variety of themes. She is also mentioned in ” International Who is Who” a Dictionary of Biographic published in 1998 by International Biographical centre, Cambridge, U:K,.
On Tuesday, 18th June 2002 she passed away.
