Industries in Udupi
Udupi has a different industrial environment, compared to other places in the country. The district has more than 2000 small-scale industries of which are most agro-based. Many industries are also based on fishing and home products in the coastal area. Fishing is a major profession here and there are many factories based on processing and canning of fish and other marine resources. These industries have gained good name in the international market. Next to fish processing units, cashew industries and coconut industries are in large number preparing cashew, coconut powder, and coconut oil. The tile factories here are involved in manufacturing varieties of decorative tiles, pharmaceutical. The handicraft industries, especially of gold and silver industries are rooted in this region and the district is known for traditional silver and gold ornaments.
The land is also known for production of traditional idols, statues and also for the supply of the articles needed in religious practices of the people. There are many industries based on local tradition and culture like wood carving, which have been helping the customers in providing essential articles. The Konkan Railway which passes through this land, and Mangalore port just 65 Km away from Udupi help the industries in supplying their products to various places and abroad.
Not many mega industries are based here and the opening of such industries are intensively protested by the environmentalists. The strong pro-environment movement in the district has prevented the growth of such industries in this region.
