Chitrakala Mandira School of Art

Chitrakala Mandira School of Art was established in the year 1971.This institute has obtained permanent recognition from the Government of Karnataka. The School offers 2 year -duration Drawing Master Certificate (DMC) Course, 5 Year - duration Art Master Course and 5 Year duration Diploma in painting course. The School Teacher Courses in drawing, Painting, Graphics, Sculpture in metal, fiber and clay. Presently 60 full-time students are enrolled in the school. Smt. Pramila Cholayya, member of the Karnataka Lalita Kala Academy is the Director of the Institute, While Sri Mohan Kadaba is the principal, Well known young artists Sri Sathyashankara Rao, Sri Vishveshwara Parkala, and Sri Purushottam Adve are the faculty members in the institute. The school has produced more than 1000 artists since its inception. Many of the albumins are well-known artists, art-teachers and entrepreneurs. Apart from the syllabus, the school arranges art-camps, art-demonstrations, art-discussions etc. The students are also trained in music and dramatics. The school has a good orchestra and drama team-well known artists from all spheres of fine art have lectured - demonstrated at the school.

Miss Kumika Nishid, a student of design at the Chikuyo Gakuin School of Dazaifu in Japan visited the Chitrakalamandira during 1996 for 3 months, to study Indian art.

The school is situated in the heart of Udupi, facing the city bus stand. The 2 acre plot of the school also includes the Jangama Mutt, which is a monastery built by the Keladi king Somashekar Nayaka during 1740. The school is surrounded by a garden, a pond and contains 4 wells. The school also has its own art gallery and presently 3 artists have their studies in the campus.
