It's earnest desire is to teach all types of fine arts to the aspirants and to have a well equipped auditorium in the near future. "Nritya Niketan" is looking forward for the co-operation of its well wishers towards this cause.
'Natya Mayuri' Vidushi Smt. Lakshmi Gururaj
Dedicated service of more than 20 years in the field of bharatanatyam, winning laurels, doing innovative work. All this and much more, it is none other than Smt. Lakshmi Gururaj of "Nritya Niketan". With supportive parents, little Lakshmi started bharatanatyam at the tender age of 9 under the guidance of Sri Mohan Rao, at Mukunda Kripa School, Udupi.
After passing junior and senior examination in bharatanatyam with distinction, Lakshmi went to Bangalore to blossom into a perfect dancer. Smt. Sandhaya Keshava Rao, overwhelmed by the splendid knowledge acquired by Lakshmi, perfected the intrinsic art flowing in the veins of Lakshmi and it is no wonder that Lakshmi secured 2nd Rank in Vidwat Examination. She stood first in District Level Bharatha Natyam competition in 1993 and bagged the prestigious "Natya Mayuri" Award . She is also a "B" Grade Artist of Bangalore Doordarshan.
Lakshmi's husband Mr. Gururaj Aithal has been extending full support and co-operation to Smt. Lakshmi Gururaj in her desire of being active in bharatanatyam. Though Smt. Lakshmi Gururaj has been giving appreciable stage performances throughout Karnataka during all these years, her earnest efforts in imparting her knowledge and training young minds both in rural and in urban areas alike, irrespective of caste creed through a well spread network of training schools in and around Udupi, is really commendable.
The students of California University, U.S.A have been given elementary training in bharatanatyam by Smt. Lakshmi Gururaj. She has also successfully directed several dance ballets such as "Bhasmasura Mohini", "Harihara Mahatme", "Panchavati", "Shri Krisham Vanade Jagadgurum" etc.
Vidwan Sri K Sudhir Rao
Yakshagana, bharatanatyam, drama, Harikatha are all different forms of fine arts and express all of them by a single statement/act would be grossly inadequate. But one can find all of them in K. Sudhir Rao. His parents wanted him to be a true ambassador of our cultural heritage and provided him with intense training in bharatanatyam from his childhood.
That was just the beginning and the rest of the faculties Sri Sudhir Rao inculcated in himself from time to time under the guidance of Sri Mohan Rao of Mukunda Kripa School, Udupi. Later his elder sister Nritya Vidhushi Smt Lakshmi Gururaj moulded him by which he could successfully pass junior, senior and vidwat examination with distinction.
An excellent orator with enviable power of assimilation, Sri Sudhir Rao befriended easily and communicated with others effectively, be it Yakshagana or bharatanatyam. Gifted with a melodious and sonorous voice, Sri Sudhir Rao could impress late Dr. Shivarama Karanth and it was that noble soul which spotted the true "Bhagavath" in Sudhir.
Once he was appointed as the "Bhagavathar" of Yaksha Ranga" founded by Dr. Karanth there was no looking back for Sudhir Rao who very effectively conveyed the sweet essence of Yakshagana all around the world including Peru, London, Sweden, Brazil, Germany, Scotland and many more. Enthrailed by the laudable performance of Sri Sudhir the foreign audience showered all their praise on him and expressed their desire to listen to him time to time again.
Sri Sudhir Rao is a very good dramatist and has partaken in several dramas. He is also a good singer and has a background of Karnatic music as well. He conducts regular bharatanatyam classes at various places in and around Udupi.
